Using Todoist as a mini-portal

I started using Todoist a few weeks ago. It’s pretty powerful once you figure out all its functions. Here’s how I’m using it.

Nested sidebar folders. In the sidebar, you have a list all your to-do lists. Call them folders, projects, whatever. I set up three major categories for my sites: Affiliate Marketing, Blogging, Other. Then I created folders under each of those, named after each site. So under “Blogging” I have a “BlueMushrooms” folder. You also have nested to do items, which is helpful if you like to break down your tasks into tiny pieces.

Monitoring comment threads. I like to engage in blog and forum threads so I created another folder in the sidebar, which I called “Monitoring” and dragged it to the top. Now when I get into a thread, I just copy the URL as a to-do item under “Monitoring”. I check it whenever I have time to do some reading and posting. When a thread has played out or I’ve lost interest, I mark it as “done”.

Sorting by urgency. You can look at just today’s tasks, just this week’s tasks, just one folder’s tasks or every task you have set up.

Mmm, good Ajax. It’s super-fast and easy to drag things around and edit.

Love the dating system. It has an awesome system for entering the due date in your task. Put in a simple “8″ and it will default to the next 8th of a month. “ev mon” means”every monday” and sets up a recurring task.

You do have to pay to get reminders and tagging, but I don’t need either of those. Overall, the system is making a difference in both how much I’m getting done and my sense that I’m getting things done.
