The new Wordpress 2.5
by Sapphire (April 4, 2008)
The new version of Wordpress 2.5 is simply awesome. (UPDATE: check the rest of this tag: WordPress 2.5 Sucks.)
It loads the site faster for visitors (and weary shared servers), which is always my main concern. It’s also got some features I’ve been hungering for forever:
- Automatic updates!!!!! This is the Rolls Royce of the new features. Now when you see a plugin that needs to be updated, you can just click a link and watch Wordpress download and install it for you. This is one bad-ass time saver! Don’t ask me how it will perform over the long haul. Is it as secure as it needs to be? Will it clutter your server with old files that don’t get removed? I don’t know. But I trust the programmers to sort it out as we go along. It’s my understanding we will also be able to update the entire blog this way, too.
- You can now mass delete posts from inside Manage Posts. I know, I know - some of you are wondering, “Why on earth?” Because sometimes I import posts from another blog I’m shutting down and don’t want to keep all of them. Sometimes I decide a whole whack of old posts have gotta go. It’s not a common task, but when you need it and it seems like it should be right there, it’s annoying. Now it’s there. Sapphire is being happy now.
- I’m finding the admin panel is much faster now, too. That’s fabulous for busy webmasters - all those seconds of waiting add up.
- When you log in, an orange balloon lets you know if there are comments to moderate. You don’t have to click Comments first and have a look (which is so annoying when there aren’t any).
- All my old plugins work.
