Testing out Blog & Website Ad Networks

by Sapphire (May 17, 2005)

As great an idea as Google AdSense is, to the point that everyone’s trying to copy it, I think we’re oversaturated. I know I don’t even see them anymore. As soon as I recognize that box, or see “Ads by Goooooooogle”, my eyes glaze over, and I move on. So it’s time to look for other ad content.

I just signed up for seven ad networks:

Blogkits
Pheedo
Chitika
AdBrite
Burst!Media
FastClicks
CrispAds

With BlogKits, Pheedo, Chitika, FasltClicks and Burst!Media, you just sign up, then wait for them to review your site. Then you wait for them to find advertisers who want to be on your site. So I’ll have to get back to you on those guys.

If I understand correctly, BlogKits is the only one that’s blog-specific in this group.

AdBrite has an AdSense like option, which I’m now testing out (look to your right, midway down the page - see the bold blue links?). Also, as I mentioned earlier, BlogKits has an Overstock partnership that should generate some very interesting ads - as you can see, I’m already running them. CrispAds is also reviewing my site.

I left off a little outfit called TribalFusion because they have a minimum requirement for daily unique visitors that I don’t yet meet. So, y’all go get everyone you know to come visit me every day, so’s I kin report to ya ’bout it! (Just kidding… my bizarre sense of humor is running amok).

Here’s the fun part: I’m going to test these on both on this humble little blog, and on the much more trafficked “B-2 Bomber” blog I’ve been talking about for a while now. We’ll see how the various ad companies perform on both - if they even accept both sites. Hopefully, no matter how I score, it will give you some ideas what to do… or to avoid doing.

For now, AdBrite and Blogkits/Overstock ads are running on both sites. I’m not thrilled with the relevancy of the AdBrite ads - then again, AdSense wasn’t being very relevant on my other site (it couldn’t figure out from the keywords what my niche was, because the niche is actually pretty fresh!). It looks better - I think you notice it more, and yet it’s unobtrusive.

I’ll keep reporting on what these babies do on both sites, and we’ll see what we learn.
