Tam Tam’s span filter cuts out crazy amounts of spam comments

by Sapphire (April 3, 2008)

I mentioned a couple of months ago that I’d just installed TanTan’s Simple Spam Filter plugin for Wordpress and it seemed to be catching a lot of spam already, but the real test would come at the start of the month, when referral spammers go crazy.

Since then, I’ve seen this plugin perform through the beginnings of both March and April, and I’m pleased to say: it rocks! I was getting dozens of spam a day on two sites, and hundreds on another site. Now on all three sites together, Akismet’s moderation page shows me a few spam comments a week.

The Spam Filter Plugin works by forcing suspicious commenters to go through re-Captcha (which is a painless sign-up process). If they pass the re-Captcha test (which is easy for a human), the comment goes through.  If not, it doesn’t even get submitted to the site, and therefore it doesn’t even show up in your Akismet spam. It’s a thing of beauty.
