Talk radio programming our conservatives

by Sapphire (February 5, 2005)

If you’ve spent much time in one of those seriously “red” states in the US - so-named because they always show up Red for Republicans on election day maps - you may already realize conservatives rate independent thinking somewhere between putting hexes on people and homicide. It’s automatically suspect - evidence of someone trying to upset the boat with new ideas when we’ve already got all the ideas we want, thank you very much.

Remember when Red meant Communist? And when Communists were all godless robots, brainwashed and indoctrinated by a party bent on taking over the world? I’m sensing a theme here.

Conservatives are allowing themselves to be brainwashed and programmed by ultra conservative talk radio. In fact, they’re basking in it. Every morning on the way to work, and sometimes at work, they revel in pre-thought thoughts they can spout and call their own. It doesn’t matter if the thoughts make sense, or if the person spouting them is a hypocritic sack of crap with a drug problem that’s beyond pathetic: it’s such a relief to have someone tell them what they think, so the next time they’re asked what they think, they’ll know.

Sound like a blanket statement? Maybe. I know a few conservatives who operate their own brains, and I’m sure someone out there listens to uber-conservative talk radio without mindlessly repeating what they hear. But by and large, this is how it is, and it’s time someone called the score. Every time you start to hear not one but several conservatives spouting the same basket-case idea or theory, ask them where they got it. The answer’s always the same.

I’m not being partisan, either. Liberals are fresh out of ideas, original or otherwise. The Democratic party in particular has wimped out so thoroughly it should be put out of its misery. No, frightening as it is, you have to give conservatives credit: they work like a bacteria, mindlessly replicating, spreading a self-serving agenda far and wide. They’ve been insidious until now, getting us used to the cracked concepts and the idea that intelligent beings could actually believe some of these things they say. And now the agenda is moving into the spotlight - now that independent thinkers have become so soft and so moral they’re paralyzed by their own sense of fairplay.
