Spambot patterns

Is anybody else getting lots and lots of spam, possibly hand-entered, and almost all from people using Russian email addresses?
This site’s been getting about 10 comments a day from some user called “Levitra”, whose messages are just strings of links. This despite the fact I have this site set so the same IP can only post once every five minutes. That means they’re posting, waiting five minutes, posting again. 10 comments - that’s 50 minutes of their time. My spam protection caught them, but since I still have to delete them manually at some point with this particular blogging software, I just banned their IP from this whole site.
My “B-2 Bomber” has a phpbb forum, which gets new member sign-ups daily - all from Russian email addresses. Since those have to be deleted manually, and the forum isn’t really active lately, I’ve just shut it down to new registration for the time being.
I’m just curious to see if anybody knows why people are doing this. It can’t possibly be worth their time, can it? Or are they using bots somehow? It just seems boneheaded to me.

we havent received that type of comment spam. its probably cheap to hire people over there to sit and enter spam. who knows they might even be slaves.

I don’t get it either. I’ve basically shut down my forum because of it. I’m not sure why they bother. But they’re annoying as hell. I’m also getting alot in my comments - on my site. Very weird. It does seem boneheaded. I don’t get it either.
