March earnings, and further thoughts on spam

by Sapphire (April 2, 2008)

March earnings sucked, but I have a plan. My sites brought in about $190. Pitiful.

I took a good hard look at my sites this month and realized something: some of them are destined for great things, others not so much. I don’t see myself running 20 blogs with 10k feed subs each a few years from now. Time to separate the wheat from the chaff:

Wheat: Project Mai Tai, B-2 Bomber, this site and a couple of others. Those are the site I think are on the right track, and will become very valuable someday if I merely keep at it.

Chaff: my thin aff sites, reprint article blogs, etc. I had been thinking those domains could be so valuable if I would only take the 36 hours a day to rehabilitate them into Real, Important Websites.

But there are advantages to having chaff - or dare I say “spam” - sites. For one, I’m not scared of these domains getting tanked by Google someday. They’re not getting much traffic from it now anyway. So I can run followable text link ads on ‘em (yes, I’m still making good money doing that on one site that got zeroed out in the Great Google Purge of Aught Seven), I can submit them to 50 schmillion directories without concern for the “spammy inbound” problem, and… yes…

I may even try Adsense one more time. (I’m currently trying some other PPC on them - we’ll see how it goes.)

I know these are short-term approaches for short-term income. That’s the whole point. Now that I’m realistically seeing that some of my sites have long-term potential and others don’t, it’s so easy to go for broke on the ones that don’t and cash in while I can. What they do make is currently being reinvested into the long-term sites (for the most part).

I’m kind of excited about this because I’m pretty sure it will result in an immediate income boost while I wait for the long-term stuff to kick in.
