New commish right after link cleanup?

by Sapphire (May 25, 2006)

I checked my ShareASale account this morning - lo and behold, a nice big new commission from one of the aff sites I cleaned up over the weekend (dead links, navigation and template issues). This really makes me wonder how important that basic maintenance is. I’ve been more focused on finding new ways to drive traffic, but maybe I should have left that goal for a bit later.

Current theory:

First, you make a good site, one you’d like to shop at. Then you faithfully do your directory submissions and maintain the site regularly, and just don’t even think about anything more advanced for a few months, maybe a year. By that time, you’ve got enough traffic coming in to identify issues, experiment with creative new tweaks and test out your ideas on new ways to drive traffic.

This is how I’m going to approach my existing sites for a while, even though a couple of them are more than a year old. I’m going to add a few product links every week, and clean out dead links every month, and keep doing the directory submissions, and see how it all progresses.
