New advertising options here at AMJ

by Sapphire (November 26, 2007)

I’ve created some advertising options on this site that do not pass pagerank. This post is both an announcement to potential advertisers and, for my usual readers, a log of what I’m doing so we can see if it works. ;)

Basically, I’ve set up four 125 x 125 banner zones, all no-followed in the top right sidebar of the blog and the left sidebar of the directory (not sure I should combine those, but I think it actually improves the traffic…? Thoughts?). These are priced at $10, which I’m hoping is fair. But the problem will be finding advertisers since I’m not dealing with a third-party ad broker who has lots of clients - this is something I’m going to become more proactive with (not sure how, but yeah).

I’ve also created several AdBrite zones where you can buy ads on a daily, monthly or weekly basis - I think the prices on those are a bit high at the moment, but I’m letting AdBrite adjust them for me. Maybe they know something I don’t. But if no one buys, the prices will just keep falling until they do, so keep watching.

I’ve set up Quantcast to give advertisers a fair picture of the site’s reach with no references to Alexa or pagerank or any of the other rather poor metrics ad buyers (and many ad networks) often rely on. AdBrite also provides stats which mention Alexa but not pagerank. I’m hoping that if we give people an alternative to Alexa and pagerank, they’ll use it.

If you have thoughts on how I’m going about this, I’d love to hear them.

    Hi,
Are you still using Wpads? I’m trying it, and wondering how you got 3 ads to appear all at once. I understand how to designate 1 zone, but not 3? Any light shed on this is appreciated!

    Hi Alison,

If you’re talking about the three graphic ads in the top right sidebar, I’m actually using this plugin:

    http://gotchance.com/got-banners-plugin/

because it rotates them to give everyone a chance to be at the top. However, you can do this with WPads. You could either set up three zones and plug them all into the sidebar (using the code it generates for the name of each zone), OR you could simply put the code for all three ads in as one “banner” with break codes or paragraph tags to format them as you want. (I haven’t tested this with every imaginable ad code - i.e., javascript, html, etc. - but I see no reason it wouldn’t work.

    Hope that helps!
