My new method of site promotion

by Sapphire (March 13, 2008)

I have a new method of site promotion: write stuff, and wait for people to link to it.

Marketing theory says you can’t do that. I say when you’ve got a small base of readers already linking to you, you can. It might not be the quickest method, but:

  • Two months ago, I bought three ads for Project Mai Tai. They brought in a combined approximate 150 visitors.
  • During the same two months, I got natural links from two popular websites. One of them brought 600 visitors (and ten new feed subscribers) and the other brought about 1k and is still bringing a couple hundred visitors every month.

Which method would you go with?

I’m really starting to think “promotion”, as in buying links, link-baiting, etc., is something you do the first two weeks after starting a site, when you have no readers. Once you have an audience, they take over the promotion for you - if your content is worth it. That’s your job.
