My hosts are playing with themselves

Last night, this blog started returning nothing but blank pages. The directory was still working – slowly – so I thought it was a problem with the Wordpress install. I know there’s a blank page bug in Wordpress, but this wasn’t that.

I still don’t know what it was, but I have a suspicion. I thought it was the LinkWorth plugin because I deleted that (couldn’t get to my deactivation page) and it got better for a while, but then it went back to blank pages. I reinstalled Wordpress, and that helped, too. For a while.

Then I accidentally deleted the plugin directory and had to start reinstalling plugins. After a while, the server got so slow that was more or less impossible. I gave up and went to sleep.

This morning it’s fine. But one of my other domains on another host – which is loading just fine – has three subdomains. One is public, the other two are password protected. The password protected ones are returning “not found” server errors – not even 404 pages. I took off the password protection, but the problem persists.

I have a feeling both hosts are changing settings, maybe for a security problem or in anticipation of upgrading to PHP 5, and these settings shouldn’t affect anyone’s site, but of course they do.

Or else there really are impish internet gnomes out to prank me. That’s the other possibility.
