Modified do-follow plugin lets you no-follow when you need to

by Sapphire (December 26, 2007)

I don’t use no-follow as a rule. All my Wordpress blogs have do-follow on them because my trusted commenters deserve the trusted form of a link. I will never encourage anyone to use no-follow because they’re a-feared a’ Google.

However: when I’m dealing with a commenter I’m not yet sure I can trust - one who hasn’t totally crossed the line to “spammer” - I’ve sometimes gone in and deleted his URL and manually no-followed any links he includes in comments, just in case HIS motive is to get juice (that way, he’ll move along and I don’t have to deal with moderating him any further).

Now there’s a version of the do-follow plugin that makes it easy to switch certain commenters to no-follow. Unfortunately, you have to do it from the comment moderation panel - I wish you could do it in the comments editing panel when you realize in hindsight someone’s been very cleverly spamming or trolling. But it also has the option when you’re writing a post, so you can make comments on that entire post no-follow. Which I guess is valuable if you’re writing about something you know spammers love.

We’ll be releasing a new version next month that will give you a bit more control in terms of where in the comment process you can control the dofollow/nofollow.
