Martha’s Back and yer gonna be in trouble…

by Sapphire (March 4, 2005)

I said when Martha Stewart went to jail on those rather hilarious charges, that she’d emerge more successful than ever before. Now we’ll see.

What exactly was the whole point of that little exercise? From my own experience, I know that thousands of people use insider information all the time and never get caught. The amount of Martha’s transgression was $40k+, not millions, so it’s not like she was a major offender. Of course, she was on the NYSE board, and that does make it seem like more of an abuse of power.

If she actually did anything wrong.

Let’s face it: their evidence is the word of a guy who’s told two entirely different, mutually contradictory stories. Can you say, “Are you sure you don’t want to recant and give us a version that will allow us to jail the person we’ve preselected to be guilty?”

She looks good in the news photos, doesn’t she? Fit and rested. For once, I find myself kind of hoping she had the country club jail experience, because I don’t think she deserved to be in jail at all. (Then again, I don’t think non-violent offenses should go to prison and cost the taxpayers their upkeep - they should just be forced to repay society somehow, through fines, repayment to victims, or public service.)
