Linkbait not a total failure
by Sapphire (March 6, 2007)
It might be slightly premature to refer to my latest linkbait campaign on Project B-2 Bomber as a “success”, but it didn’t totally flop from a lack of interest like some of the others. It’s getting responses on site, at least: whether or not people are telling their friends, I don’t know yet. It’s just been a day, and I’m hunting for a good stats package that doesn’t require me to add a bunch of code to my header. (BTW, anyone know of any good referrer stat plugins for WP? If not, I’ll just start playing later.)
I’m not going to detail the entire linkbait project, but I’ll give you a hint as to part of it: I found a way to make comments on certain posts very non-threatening. People are intimidated about commenting on blogs sometimes. They’re afraid a simple “Wow, that’s true!” will look stupid, or if they elaborate, someone will debate with them and make them miserable. I figured out a way to defuse that - just for certain posts, since obviously I want all the discussion I can get on the bulk of them.
So far, I’ve had several commenters who have rarely or never commented before; one user posted that the idea was great, and promptly made use of it. I have high hopes for this project. At the very least it should generate lots of those blog pages that the SE’s love. At most, I’m hoping it’ll bring in scads of new traffic.
