Link cloaking via subdomains works… as long as your subdomain works

by Sapphire (August 18, 2007)

I don’t know what the problem is, but this summer my subdomains keep winking out and then coming back online. It happens on more than one host: they’ll be working fine, then suddenly I get “cannot find server” errors for one subdomain or another on a site that’s otherwise working fine.

This is really hitting Project Mai Tai right now - all its affiliate ads are cloaked through subdomains, and suddenly none of those subdomains are working. They haven’t worked in days. Cpanel says they exist, but my host says they can’t find any. Whatever.

I guess I should look for another cloaking setup, but I haven’t found one that works this well. I cloak CJ links by having a different subdomain for every one of their randomly named “kjwertwr” type servers. Then I used Search and Replace to change the actual links from, say, “kjwertwr.com” to “c1.projectmaitai.com”. That way if I ever want to change them back, it’s fairly simple, just doing the S&R thing in reverse.

But what? What better way is there to cloak them?
