Learning GIMP

by Sapphire (February 14, 2008)

I’ve never been great with graphics. My usual banner consists of an image I’ve bought from someone else and some neat-o text I’ve applied. I can do drop-shadows, too, woohoo! My logos were always rectangular and separated from the site. Never any flow.

Yesterday I sat down to make a new template for one of my sites, forced myself to learn GIMP, and was pleasantly surprised with the results. I just refused to stop until I had a header that had stuff that appears to spill over into the sidebars and main body, and also a post-it note kind of thing*.

Here’s what I’m wondering: is anybody far enough behind me on graphics that they’d appreciate some tips and tutorials? Or would I just be boring people? Because I know you can get a lot fancier than I got yesterday, and there may be better methods than I found. Let me know in the comments if you’re interested.

*The post-it note thing was really not fancy. I’ve seen all these gorgeous ones around, and the Photoshop tutorials I looked at lost me early on because while GIMP is very similar, it’s not quite the same. Plus, I was getting tired. But what I came up with actually looked professional. Not breath-taking, but professional - and that’s what the site needs.

I would love the tutorials–at least now and then, particularly for the more specialized stuff like the things that look like they spilling into the rest of the area. I have created something like that, but considering how much work it took, I know there are better ways and would love to learn that!
