I did something right?
by Sapphire (July 25, 2005)
Time for an update on the blog site I nicknamed the “B-2 Bomber”: it’s beating the crap out of this one. I wish I knew what I did right, so I could offer you some sagely webmasterly advice (yeah, right, like I’m now a guru), but I’m not sure what I did. My best guess is: good content.
It’s a purely content-driven site with just barely over 100 articles. It’s not yet listed at DMOZ. It seems to be stuck at PR 3. And yet traffic this month is already about 65% higher than for the whole of last month, and we still have a few days to go. It’s suddenly - just in the past week - got thousands of backlinks in Yahoo and MSN. Yahoo’s indexed over 1,000 pages, and seems to be scooping them up as fast as I can create them. For example, I went in a couple of hours ago and puts tags on every entry that didn’t already have tags. This technically generates new pages, because a person can search for entries under each specific tag. I guess I generated 29 pages, because when I checked my indexed page count in Yahoo this afternoon, it was up 29 pages from this morning’s tally.
Good grief.
Google lists just over 100 backlinks, always being the conservative of the bunch. Both Google and MSN have indexed over 400 pages (though MSN credits it with over 2,000 backlinks). While they’re more conservative on indexing, I do notice they pick the best pages to index. For example, they seem to avoid error pages and backend admin pages, while Yahoo is indexing everything. I’m happy either way.
I really haven’t promoted this site like I should have. I’ve been too busy writing the articles, tending to hosting issues, etc. So my best guess really is that the content is really striking a chord with people. Who knew?
