HTML Meta Tags and SEO

by Sapphire (February 8, 2005)

Here’s something I’ve been wondering about. Over the years since I first started studying SEO, the recommendations about meta tags have changed over and over. The keyword meta tag used to be essential - then it got so abused by spammers that some people leave it off entirely. Other tags have come and gone in importance, but HTML Meta Tags That Help Your Web Site Ranking :: SEO-Forums.com spells out a strategy that makes sense. Seems like the dust settled and the rules have matured into something simple and common sense.

You will probably find other recommendations out there, and I encourage you to evaluate them all for yourself. But if anyone suggests using meta tags in a way that sounds bizarre, be very skeptical: it’s probably a spam technique, and if it’s not penalized or devalued now, you can assume it will be.

Build for the future. Rules like the ones in this article are not likely to change.
