How are my sites scoring? Part 2

by Sapphire (April 9, 2005)

Continued from yesterday’s article.

My B-sites, as I named them yesterday (in a fit of jaw-dropping creativity), are doing a lot better than my A-sites. The two B sites are an entirely different type of site from the A-sites. And the B-sites are targetting extremely different markets from each other.

B-1 launched about 4 months ago. B-2 launched not quite 1 month ago. B-2 is kicking B-1’s ass all over the place and around the bend.

Now, B-1 is a promising site. It’s targeting a decent-sized, but fairly saturated market. It’s not the only site people can go to for what it offers, and it’s definitely not the best. But that’s okay, because it means the only thing “wrong” with it is: I need to learn more about the market and improve the site accordingly. That’s very simple compared to some of the diagnoses you’ll get on a web project. Very business 101 - do what you’re doing, only better. I can work with that. :-D

Get this: B-2 started out as a hobby. It’s a labor of love and will remain so, but as the traffic improves, you bet your sweet bippy I’m monetizing it. It targets a fairly small market, or at least that was my impression going in: now I’m wondering if it’s a market that just hasn’t realized itself yet. The kind of thing where people don’t know they want it yet, but do as soon as they see it. And the thins is, this market is so tiny and underfed, and there isn’t a site out there that’s approaching it quite the way I am.

I may have just cornered a market.

Now, I’m not getting the sort of numbers people brag about on affiliate marketing forums - you know, the posts that read, “I had an idea for a site, so I set it up and half an hour later 8 million visitors came and I made $4.3 million”. I’m never sure I believe those guys, anyway. If they’re getting that lucky, great for them.

But this B-2 site of mine (hey, I think I’ll call it the “B-2 Bomber” and now I really am having a creative moment) is poised for something. Can I carry it off? Can I monetize it in a way that works? Can I keep building the traffic? Can I get the word out to others who “don’t know they want it yet” before someone finds me, copies me, and markets it better than I can? You know what I’m gonna say, don’t you?

Tune in next week for the adventures of the B-2 Bomber!
