Hide from the Google Cookie with Bookmarklets

In light of recent paranoia regarding Google’s ability to track nearly everything you do on the web, if you go near any of their services, I thought I’d look for some alternatives. Whether you’re worried about identity theft, or Google figuring out what sites you run, or just don’t like the idea of anybody tracking you like that, the good news is, we have some alternatives.

Bookmarlets are little bits of javascript you can download as bookmarks for most any modern browser, on any platform. Or you can visit sites that list them, and use them from there. Here’s the Google anonymous cookie bookmarket that makes you effectively anonymous, yet saves your viewing and searching preferences. Here’s another page from the same site that has bookmarklets for searching Google without ever touching their site directly (it opens a Javascript pop-up window where you enter your search term).

Do a search for bookmarkets, and you’ll find tons of these things for all sorts of purposes. Not just anonymity, either – convenience. For example, you can validate your site’s HTML with one click instead of going to a site, typing in your name, clicking enter.
