Great Intro to SEO

Here’s an article that makes for a great primer on SEO: SEO For Dummies (Search Engine Optimization Basics) :: SEO-Forums.com. It may make the whole thing sound complicated if you’re new to this, but most of it boils down to building a site from a visitor’s perspective. How would you search for the stuff your site offers? Would you search for what it offers?

One thing I’m searching for articles on is how site hierarchy affects rankings. Maybe not at all, but I wonder. I’ve designed sites where the navigation links I gave visitors seemed very organized, but if you actually looked at where my pages were in folders on my server, it was pretty haphazard. Some of the nested pages were in subfolders, others weren’t, etc. I wonder now if spiders had trouble sorting the mess? I really don’t know. If I find an article, I’ll share it with you.

I now create sites where the navigation the visitor sees matches the site hierarchy on the server. It may make little or no difference to SE spiders (although it’s good web design). But it seems to me it might help. /shrug
