Google AdSense withholding taxes

If you work with AdSense, you need to know about this: Google Tax Withholding

People are trying to figure out the rhyme and reason behind Google withholding taxes on some people’s AdSense income checks, and not on others. It seems to far only to be happening to US residents, but beyond that, there’s little rhyme or reason. It could be that those getting taxes withheld are at a similar level of earnings - obviously, no one’s going to reveal their earnings online as that’s against Google’s policy.

Personally, I’m not understanding how Google has any authority to withhold taxes on independent contractors rather than employees. Independent contractors have to file their own income taxes, even if they work for a company.

Google has nothing to gain by doing this, so I’m speculating that it’s the IRS pressuring them. And again, it’s complete bull if they’re not employees.

I’m very interested to see how this wraps up.
