FTP hell
by Sapphire (September 28, 2006)
I’m so tired of dealing with unreliable hosting that I decided to consolidate a bunch of sites onto two hosts - I don’t want all my eggs in the exact same basket, so that something will always be up and earning. This was a fairly simple process, and it would have been pretty quick had they all been on their own hosting packages. But a lot of them were add-ons.
So I’ve just spent big sections of two days downloading folders from their add-on sites and then uploading them to their new packages (both my packages are reseller-type accounts). Why did this take so long? Well, each download would’ve taken a good thirty minutes… if they hadn’t disconnected every twenty minutes or so. Which then required a re-do, and even though it skips all the files it’s already uploaded, even that takes time. Lots of time.
Add to that the fact that Verizon DSL has no qualms about being up, down, up, down for about two hours every evening, right at the time I finally get some uninterrupted time to work. I hate Verizon with a passion. Unfortunately, the cable company to which my neighborhood is consecrated sucks just as much. Believe me, I’m always on the lookout for another fast connection option.
So, that’s been my past couple of days. How’ve you been? ![]()

When I have only ftp access I use the script that can download archives right from your hosting account. Quick and saves you some traffic. Some hosting providers put restrictions on such scripts, but it should work most of the time.

Oh, thanks, Ignat! That looks very cool. I finished everything this afternoon - doing it the long way - but if I ever need to do anything like this again, I will definitely check out your script.
