Follow-up on Google Sitemaps

by Sapphire (August 8, 2005)

As I mentioned last week, I’m trying out the Google site map on several of my sites. So far, I think I’m seeing some very worthwhile results. One site - which was already well-indexed - only got about 30 new pages indexed after I started generating the map. Another, which has PR 0 and is fairly new, has only gotten a handful of new pages indexed. But the others are all seeing anywhere from 70-170 new pages since I put them on the map.

Most of my sites use blog or CMS software, and therefore had simple plug-ins or modules to create the map for me, and update it every time I add something. One site didn’t, so I just submitted the RSS feed, and it got about 150 new pages indexed.

I haven’t tried the map on any of my static sites yet. I’m actually thinking about revamping them as CMS sites anyway, and the truth is, I’ve just been neglecting them in general.

But even if you have a well-indexed dynamic site, I would give the Google Sitemap a try. You might find you can get even more pages indexed than ever before. Another possible added benefit: this site had an explosion of new pages indexed in Yahoo as soon as I added the map. This may be a coincidence - I have yet to see similar results on any of my other sites. But in either case, it’s worth a shot.
