Exploring ad buying to promote sites

by Sapphire (December 27, 2007)

I’ve decided to set up an advertising budget each month and start promoting my sites through methods other than SEO and free forms of promotion. The question is: how? Where? This is a whole new skill I have to learn.

I think I’m going to start by advertising on relevant sites, buying (no-followed or Javascripted) text link or graphic ads from them. I’ve had very good luck doing it this way once or twice, and never much luck with platforms like AdWords.

Now I’m wondering: is it better to throw your whole ad budget at one site, or spread it out over a lot of smaller sites? Fortunately, I don’t think all blogs value their traffic at the same rate, so I may be able to find some bargains - sites that can send more traffic for less money than other sites in the same niche.

I’m excited! But yeah, I don’t know what the hell I’m doing. :D

See, so far behind on keeping up with my reading - I’m just now going to post :) I’m in the same boat as you as far as advertising on other sites go. I’ve tried to go the super cheap way and wait and wait for the organic search listings and when that happens - it’s not bad. But I’m trying to up the traffic/sales by trying my hand at advertising on other blogs and sites.

So far what I’ve done is set myself a very modest budget of around $100. I put an ad on a popular site that was at the time selling for a lower rate - and I jumped on it. I then went around and added my links to sites with the Scratchback linking thing - you can get $1 text links on some popular sites! Then I’ve advertised on some sites that offer lower 125×125 ads and so far it’s been pretty good as far clicks go I think - more eyeballs on the site.

I’m slowly working my way through the whole world of advertising. How’s it going for you so far?

    I ran one ad! :D

My budget is around $100/month, too. I need to look into Scratchback and 125 ads. My first ad was through BlogAds, and I should go to their marketplace to see what else I can get for my money.
