Directory maintenance tip
by Sapphire (August 8, 2006)
I had several thousand directory submissions to go through the other day, between two directories I maintain. Instead of using the directory software interface for reviewing and approving them, I’ve started going straight into the database where I can see enough info to delete an awful lot of them on site.
I can also see their email addresses, which you can’t in any of the directory interfaces I use.
Yesterday, I noticed I had quite a few submissions from the same email address. Many of them violated my “top domain only” rule, so that knocked them out instantly. All the others I looked at either had links to bad sites, were just crap built for AdSense, etc. Then I noticed another email address submitting a lot of other crap sites.
So I searched in my database for entries belonging to the first email address. There were over 600 in one directory. Mass deletion to the rescue, after a quick glance through to make sure I wasn’t missing anything that looked nice. The other email address had submitted about 100 sites, none of them worth accepting, so I cleared those out next.
I’m guessing these are either mass submissions via software, and/or SEO dudes submitting for clients. Whatever the case, using the database to mass delete them is really going to speed up my job from now on, and give me more time to check out the sites that might actually be worthwhile.
