Directories going paid
by Sapphire (March 5, 2007)
All my directories now require a reciprocal link for free links, and offer paid options for regular non-recip links and featured links. I started these directories a couple of years ago and kept them completely free all that time, but now with the amount of spam I have to clear out of them every month, it’s just not worth it.
Now I only have a couple dozen links to go through each month, so it’s much easier to get a real look at the sites. Before it was just impossible: you can only look at so many sites before you go blind. It could easily have been a full-time job.
For anyone maintaining or thinking of starting a directory, I’ll mention that the money coming in is not bad. I’m not selling many links yet, but it’s certainly a lot better than nothing.

I don’t have any directory sites. I like the idea of them though.
I do want a directory in my main niche which has now become a network of its own it seems.
Good for you to make it recip link for free link - its only fair

I thought about creating a directory site. It would definetly have to have an auto approval process. Step 1) Email Confirmation. 2) Automatically check site versus a keyword list. If the site is using any banned keywords it would be automatically declined.
Do you have any other suggestions of things I would be able to automatically check for in my site approval process?

I’ve only used a few scripts. I think there are a lot out there that do the email confirmation thing, so just look for that feature. I personally haven’t used one that auto-checked for keywords, but there is another way to do this. You can go into PHPMyAdmin and do a search in the database for your string of banned words. It’ll turn up all the entries with those words, with a delete button right next to them. Press it, and one more confirmation button, and you’re done.
If you want more details on how to do this, let me know - I could make a post breaking it down step by step.
