Cpanel build issues, and further hosting adventures

This site was down for a few hours on Friday, and now another blog of mine – the one I call the “B-2 Bomber” – has been mostly belly up for 2 days.

Actually, the sites weren’t down – the databases had become inaccessible. In the case of this site, it happened right after my host installed a new build on Cpanel. I’m guessing that means something got configured wrong in that build. What would happen when I went into Cpanel was, it said I had 0 databases. MySql reported nada, and PHPMyAdmin wouldn’t even connect (rejected the “password”- whatever password that was). So when I went to my Backup section in Cpanel, it had a funky error message under “databases” indicating Cpanel couldn’t connect to the databases. They were still there, intact – just inaccessible.

Fortunately, my new host caught it on their own before I even had a chance to submit a trouble ticket. That bodes well for them, as far as I’m concerned.

My B-2 Bomber host, unfortunately, is not so on the ball. Considering I paid less than $10/year for the hosting (it was originally just a hobby site), I’m not all that disappointed. Really, it’s a great host for a starter site, for someone just getting their feet wet or just setting up a small site. But my site had grown unexpectedly, and the last thing I wanted right now was a couple of days’ downtime – right as I’m poised and ready to seriously take off.

So I found a new host. I have the sort of luck with hosts that some people have with the opposite sex. I find myself wondering, is it me? Is there someone else? What do other customers have that I don’t got? I can change, I swear! I’m willing to pay for it, for cryin’ out loud! But every few weeks, I find myself cruising the web hosting forums, looking for someone new.

It’s not a case of getting what you pay for, either. Some of my cheapest hosts have been my best. If it weren’t for the fact that some of my sites interlink, I’d have them all on that cheap host. But even though the interlinkage is very natural and appropriate, and not just a forbidden “linking strategy”, Google has tinfoiled me into Paranoialand, and I find myself scoping out C-classes like that’s the most important trait a host possesses.

Maybe that’s why the hosts all seem to hate me. Maybe they feel cheap, like I only want them for their C-classes, when they want me to love them for their mainframes?

Or maybe the stress of hosting crud has finally gotten to me, and my brain is snapping like a dry twig. Yep, my money’s on that last one.
