Becoming a webmaster
by Sapphire (May 9, 2007)
I had an epiphany over the weekend: I’ve not been coming at online earning from a position of power.
I’ve been trying stuff. I’ve been seeing what I can do. I’ve been cautious. These are all approaches that assume a degree of failure. Now I want to start thinking of myself as someone who builds and launches sites. Some for money, some for passion. I want to stop thinking of this as a hobby and think of it as a profession.
As soon as I realized all that, everything changed. It’s brought everything into focus - even the stuff that seems to have nothing to do with the other stuff. And it’s in perspective with my offline life, too. So far I’ve had a really fun and rewarding week as I’ve worked on my sites - usually I have this vague sense of urgency to get something done, but I don’t know what, and then I get distracted. This week, it’s all flowing in a way it never has before.
The decisions I normally stress over, the things I worry about… those are suddenly in perspective, too. I hope this lasts.

Wooo! Isn’t it great to have an epiphany like that
I think it’s really overcoming a hurdle when you realize what you’re doing isn’t so much of a hobby anymore but a job. You can enjoy it for sure, but there is also a bottom line - something that you have reach before you can measure any sense of success or failure.
Awesome!
You’ve also changed your layout
Change is good!

Thank you, Yoda. I mean, Mark.
Empress, that’s it exactly. And yes, the layout was sort of to signal to my mind that I’ve made a change. Plus, it loads faster and I like it better.

I started to do a website for free to get as many customers as possible and after charging the rest. Is that a good idea? Also my potential target country has no big tradition in terms of internet, but I’m thinking ahead of the future. Does it helps?
Thanks

That sounds like a reasonable plan. There’s never any guarantee what’s going to work - if it was, this would all be so easy! But your idea sounds logical. Good luck!

I was reading your blog - and thought you’d be interested in the
following story and major initiative that is happening out of Notting
Hill, London. If you google The Many Worlds of Jonas Moore you will
get the picture of what is happening. And when you realise that we
have done this all from a Starbucks you will be amazed. The brands
are backing us too.
As you know the big media agencies are eyeing up UGC content for the
web and IPod as a big new market. We are launching a campaign for
garage content creators (like ourselves) to keep content independent
and cool. To come up with our own content ideas and pitch them to the
big brand directors.
With IPhone and IPod redefining the content landscape - there is a
major revenue opportunity for eveyone who mashes up content and
creates cool You Tube clips.
As mentioned we have already been doing this very successfully with
http://www.jonasmoore.com…from STARBUCKS, Notting Hill, London if you can
believe that ….and, again as mentioned, have already persuaded major
brands to back the cause and cut out the middle men…..plus we
released on You Tube two
viral clips yesterday that have been really grating on the media
agencies!
Here are the links and I have attached a press release….given your
background I would love to hear what you think!
VIdeo 1 is called…
Are MEDIA AGENCIES CRAP?

Video 2 is called….
Are AD AGENCIES AS CRAP AS MEDIA AGENCIES?

What a great post, Sapphire. It is such a great way to think about what we do - approaching things from a point of “of course” rather than “this might or might not work”.
