Awesome anti-spam filter to help Akismet
by Sapphire (February 2, 2008)
TanTan’s Simple Spam Filter plugin for Wordpress works with Akismet to stop comment spam before it gets into your Akismet moderation queue. I’ve been getting hit with tons of comment spams a day on a couple of sites, so I installed this to try it. It reported that it had caught 191 spam comments on one site in just a few hours. I’m not sure I’m quite buying that number, but there were no new comments in the filter and this is the first time a few hours have gone by without them.
Don’t be put off by the fact that you have to sign up with reCaptcha and get keys to make this work - the plugin itself guides you through that process. Once you install it and enable it in the plugins page, you need to go to your Comments menu; under that, choose Spam Filter. Click “Enable reCAPTCHA mode” and below that will appear the instructions for setting that up. Also, you get different keys for every domain without having to sign up with multiple accounts, which is nice if you’re concerned about someone finding a way to track down all your domains via your keys.
