ARGH!!!! Curses!
by Sapphire (July 5, 2005)
I spent this weekend looking at my hosting situation. This site is doing great, and so are some of the others. But some of them needed new hosting, so I decided to take care of that.
I was also supposed to be building a new site, adding articles here, doing all my daily tasks on all my other sites, and in some parallel universe, celebrating the Fourth of July. Guess what my weekend schedule looked like?
1) Get up, fix coffee, research hosts until eyeballs begin to bleed. Check for right features at reasonable price, look at reviews of hosts, research reputation of the users posting reviews (who may be lying bastards), look at WhoIs for weirdness, check TOS/AU to make sure they ban porn and gambling sites, or at least have strong measures in place to protect my site from being in the same IP with spammers and resource hogs, check nameserver IP’s to make sure they’re spread out a little if they’re going to be linking (even organically), email potential hosts, evaluate response quality and promptness, knock head against wall, sob.
2) Shower. Maybe eat something.
3) Research hosts some more (see above post).
4) Remind self “this too shall pass”, then decide “screw this” and go out to lunch somewhere nice. Bring pad of paper in case The Hosting Revelation You’ve Been Waiting For comes to you while you’re away from the computer.
5) Come home, attempt to research hosts, whimper, put in DVD’s.
Something like that. There were a few more steps, I believe, but that’s the gist. So please forgive me if I’m a bit scarce in here for a few days. All those nice plans I had to rebuilding that aff site are still on hold, as are most of my other related projects. My main focus is on actually getting the sites up and working on their new hosts (I’m using add-on domains for the first time, for some of them… another one is a blog that just, uh… has some issues, but it’ll be fine).
Still… I’m going to be building a new directory soon, which should be up fairly soon (those are easy, once you’ve done a few).
And my eyeballs are going to be bleeding, and you may occasionally hear a whimper from behind the admin panel. Still, you know… at least I’m alive. I think.
