To evaluate my stats this month, I removed CrispAds because I assume from their total non-responsiveness they’re slinking off in the night with everyone’s money. This is not a big loss for me, but I’ve talked to people who are owed as much as $200. And the advertisers… those poor people actually PAID money, and who knows if they’ve gotten what they had coming to them.
My tally for the … READ MORE

Spam Huntress was kind enough to track down the third-party who’s putting Disney in the referrer logs of a number of blogs, including one of mine. Thank SpectorBrain for the tip.
I’ve started banning the IP addresses of some of the spammers I get on this site. I realize this could deny a few honest users, but when you get dozens of spams from one IP in a few minutes, … READ MORE

I noticed today that Google is counting fewer backlinks to a couple of my sites than they have been, so I checked to make sure the PR was still the same. It was. Then I went around to forums, trying to discover if there’d been a PR update. Some said there was one in June, some said there was one last week. That’s when I quit reading. My traffic keeps … READ MORE

Am I the only one who wishes sites would stop reporting Alexa rankings like they mean anything at all? For example, this site ranks around 70,000. Another site of mine, which sometimes surpasses this one for traffic, ranks somewhere in the 5 millions.
Isn’t Alexa supposed to give people some idea how trafficked a site is? All they’re really telling is how many Alexa toolbar users read your site. Might … READ MORE

Yesterday I wrote about the idea that I’m trying to do too much too fast with my affiliate sites. It would certainly explain the burnout I’ve been feeling.
The bottom line is: I don’t want to put myself through the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree trying to figure out how Google positions sites. If it’s going to be that hard or that miserable, I’d do better getting some offline schooling and getting a nice-paying … READ MORE

One of my most-trafficked sites - the “B-2 Bomber” suddenly has less than 100 pages indexed. At one point it had over 9,000. It still gets good traffic from Google, and sometimes Google reports 1,400 pages indexed instead of 100. But I’m concerned.
The one thing this site has that none of my other sites have is a PHPBB forum that constantly has people signing up with their spam casino and porn sites … READ MORE

Oy. I wrote this whole big long post, but my server logs me out every 5 minutes or so, so the short version is… the software ate it. I hate that. I’ll reconstruct it from memory as best I can.
I’ve been ridiculously busy offline lately, and I don’t have a lot to report here. I dumped Pheedo for CrispAds once again, because Pheedo was performing about as well as the … READ MORE

Ever since the last Google update, I’m seeing huge discrepancies from one Google datacenter to the next in the number of pages indexed for some of my sites. The range on two sites is from less than a hundred to around 2000.
I’m not sure this matters, and I definitely don’t know what one would do about it if one felt it did matter. Google’s sending a fair amount of traffic, so whatever. … READ MORE

I run three free directories, including the one here. My submission queues are so backed up with utter crap that I can’t keep up and get the decent sites approved in a reasonable amount of time. Nor can I possibly look at every site carefully - I’m having to delete a lot of them based on just content. For example over 99% of the travel sites I’ve had submitted are crap, so … READ MORE

Has anyone found a better stats tracking package than AwStats? On two different sites this month, on two different hosts, I’ve had AwStats simply not report any unique visitors for a day or more in a row, while StatCounter.com confirms I have indeed had the normal number of uniques on those days.
I like StatCounter - it provides info AwStats doesn’t, such as whichy keyphrase was used on which search engine. And the ability … READ MORE
