MaxBlogPress writes some great plugins. I use Different Posts Per Page to control how many posts my visitors see on various types of pages (10 for archives, 4 or 5 for home page, etc.). I use the Ping Optimizer because to this day no one at WordPress will confirm whether or not future posts ping when they go live, or when you write them, and that plugin seems to take care of the issue either way.

I don’t even mind that MaxBlogPress uses the plugins to force us onto his mailing list, which you must join in order to have the plugins. I can’t hold it against plugin authors that they want something for their troubles. (You can use the same email address over and over, at least.)

What I think is really unfair is that every time you update the plugin, you have to go into the settings and re-enter your mailing address and yet nothing in the plugin description on your plugins page says to do this. No, the way you find out you needed to do that after updating is when you notice the plugin isn’t working anymore.

Every time you update, you have to do this step, and yet it’s not in the description on the plugin page. If you unsub from the email list, you have to re-sub every time you update.

So if you use those plugins, be aware of this extra step.
