AdSense changes look… very slightly

Date April 6, 2007

Thanks to AdSense being included on at least every site on the internet, including lots and lots of crap spam sites and say the same stuff as each other and frequently show up as results 1, 2 and 3 in the SERPs, human beings have evolved a new brain filter that causes them to ignore Adsense ads completely.

Unless they’re getting paid to click on them, of course.

So now Google is coming out with a new … READ MORE

Thanks, Bonnie!

Date April 6, 2007

Bonnie just signed up under me on /* */ , for which I got paid $25. I figured that was worth a public thank you and a link to her site. (Bonnie, if you have another site in mind, let me know and I’ll link to that.)

Coming up with new blog posts

Date April 5, 2007

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about using Bloglines to speed up your blog writing. That may be all you need if most of your posts involve linking to someone else’s and then offering insights of your own. But what if there’s nothing worth linking to today? What if you want to write something original, and your brain isn’t spawning new ideas by the truckload?

Go to the blogs of the … READ MORE

Generating extra posts

Date April 5, 2007

Blogging sucks. It’s hard to come up with new content all the time. There is a way to cheat a little and add a few extra posts every month.

Do roundups of posts you’ve done in the past. LifeHacker does those “retro roundups” of posts from this time last year, plus “best comment threads” posts (also giving your commentators some attention there), and so on.
Take series you’ve posted in the past and … READ MORE

Date April 5, 2007

LinkWorth is a site that sells text link ads, much like - guess? - Text Link Ads. Very good! You had your Wheaties today!

Does Digg play fair?

Date April 4, 2007

Digg has always claimed they don’t censor stories. Now SEORefugee offers some compelling evidence that maybe indeed they do:

At first I figured this was just a momentary glitch. However, it remained in this Anna Nicole Smith-esque (dead but not quite buried) state for over an hour. Also of note, is the fact that a Digg employee noticed my submission and commented on it just before the story did it’s mysterious disappearing act. User … READ MORE

Exact domain name matches losing steam with Google

Date April 3, 2007

Aaron Wall of SEOBook reports that exact domain name matches are going to lose ranking power in Google. Right now, a domain called “reallygoodcattoysmadefromclay.com” will rank very high for the search term “really good cat toys made from clay”, but not for much longer.

I assume other factors will be taken into account, so that your clay cat toy domain can remain at the top if there are other indications it’s a good site … READ MORE

BlogDesk - great tool for bloggers

Date April 3, 2007

Do you ever wish you could blog offline and upload your posts when you go online some other time? Or maybe your blog’s posting panel loads slowly in your browser. Or maybe you like to post to several blogs at once, and having all those posting panels open in your browser is just annoying.

BlogDesk is a small, fast software app that lets you blog straight from your desktop. I’m using it … READ MORE

When to raise TLA prices?

Date April 3, 2007

When is the right time to ask /* */ to raise your prices, and by how much? I have two sites that have sold 7 of their 8 spots (this is one of them), but I’m not sure whether that means the price is just right, or that I could get more.

My Alexa ranking are slowly falling across the board (not that Alexa’s more accurate than a gopher with an abacus, but … READ MORE

Making money on content blogs

Date April 2, 2007

Most of the advice on making money with blogs refers to blogs about products. How do you make money with a site that attracts lots of people who want to read about your topic but tend to be ad-blind? Is it hopeless? Must it forever be merely a labor of love?

Darren at ProBlogger has a great post about indirect ways to earn money from a content blog. He talks … READ MORE
