100% Uptime Shared Hosting

by Sapphire (September 20, 2006)

Did the title make you think I’d found some?  Oh, hell no.  Not at any price.  It’s just a fantasy I like to drool over from time to time.

Hey, here’s a sort of philosophical Zen question in the form of a math story problem: when you’re in the middle of working on your site, and it goes down, how long will it be down?  Answer: forever.  When you’re busy using it, that’s how it feels anyway.  And perception is reality.  Can you tell I’m waiting for one of my other sites to come back online so I can finish what I was doing with it?

Of course, even a dedicated server doesn’t guarantee 100% uptime.  You need redundancy through lots and lots of datacenters and stuff, I believe, to accomplish the sort of uptime sites like Google and CNN and Amazon enjoy.  Then again, Google’s Blogger service was down for 90 minutes earlier this week, so there you go.

Well, back to my finger tapping.  Would it be too much of a stretch to blame hosting for all of my lapses in getting stuff done?
